Institute for Biomedical Engineering, Science and Technology Selects Funding Recipients

Four interdisciplinary biomedical research projects have been selected for funding through the 2022 IBEST-OUHSC Cross-Campus Program, a co-funding mechanism created to facilitate the development of multidisciplinary teams of OU Norman and OU Health Sciences Center faculty to compete for external funding on significant cross-disciplinary healthcare research topics.

The Institute for Biomedical Engineering, Science and Technology in the  Gallogly College of Engineering spans research and education activities in bioscience and biomedical engineering on the Norman and Oklahoma City campuses.

The four teams are:

Project 1: A pilot bedside-to-bench study, employing a pre-clinical localized ablative immunotherapy-based combination approach to modulate biomarkers of immunotherapy resistance identified in metastatic melanoma patients treated with immune checkpoint inhibitors. Led by Abdul Rafeh Naqash, OU Health Sciences Center, and Wei Chen, Stephenson School of Biomedical Engineering.

Project 2: Functional network alterations in medically intractable epilepsy. Led by Andrew Conner and James Scott, both from the OU Health Sciences Center, and Han YuanStephenson School of Biomedical Engineering.

Project 3: Evaluation of anti-inflammatory immmunotherapy in a rodent model of intracerebral hemorrhage. Led by John Clegg, Stephenson School of Biomedical Engineering and Andrew Bauer, OU Health Sciences Center.

Project 4: Pilot research in cortical biomarkers for pain modulation. Led by Yuan Yang, Stephenson School of Biomedical Engineering, and Desiree Azizoddin, OU Health Sciences Center.

“We especially appreciate the support from the associate vice president for research development Ann West and the associate vice president for health sciences research Darrin Akins in conducting external reviews to select these proposals,” said Lei Ding, IBEST director.

“We appreciate the support of the Center for Faculty Excellence at the Norman campus in proposal preparation and teaming efforts, as well as follow-up efforts to all applications teams in finding and securing future external funding.”
